New Freedom Borough and Northern Central Railway are proud to announce the return of the Smoke on the Rail BBQ Festival, taking place July 24–26, 2026, at Marge Goodfellow Park in New Freedom, Pennsylvania.
Recognized as one of the premier barbecue competitions in the Mid-Atlantic region, Smoke on the Rail brings together elite pitmasters, backyard cooks, certified judges, sponsors, vendors, and thousands of visitors for a weekend celebrating great food, community, and friendly competition.
This year's event embraces the America 250 theme in recognition of America's 250th anniversary, highlighting the rich traditions of barbecue, community gatherings, and American heritage.
More than 75 competition teams from across the country are expected to compete for thousands of dollars in prize money and championship honors in Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned contests. The event will also feature specialty ancillary contests, demonstrations, live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities throughout the weekend.
Adding to the prestige of the event, the 2026 Smoke on the Rail BBQ Festival has been designated an official qualifier for the 2027 BBQ World Cup in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Grand Champion will earn an invitation to compete against top barbecue teams from around the world, elevating Smoke on the Rail to the international barbecue stage and further establishing New Freedom as a destination for competitive barbecue.

"It is a community event that brings people together, supports local businesses, showcases our community, and generates funding that can be reinvested into projects that enhance New Freedom and the Southern York County region. Being selected as a BBQ World Cup qualifier is a tremendous honor and reflects the growth and reputation of this event within the barbecue community."
The festival will also continue its tradition of recognizing individuals who make a difference beyond the competition circuit through the Bigger Than BBQ Award.
Located adjacent to the Heritage Rail Trail and historic Northern Central Railway, Smoke on the Rail offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience world-class barbecue in one of Pennsylvania's premier Trail Town communities.
